Happy Birthday Wednesday Writers · 9 March 2013
Happy belated birthday Monroe Wednesday Writers! I can hardly believe it has been more than a year since our first meeting.
I know I should be more attentive. It has been a while since I have been to any meetings of Bernadette Pajer and company. But it was great to see old friends and meet some new ones at the couple meetings of 2013 I have attended. I miss the weekly camaraderie and commiseration. And I miss the enthusiasm. For writing and for each other.
The group has changed much since I attended that first meeting over a year ago. At least the members are different. I see lots of new faces and only a few of the people who were at that very first meeting. Still, I hear lots of wonderful voices. I hear beautiful writing. I hear wonderful support for one another.
That support is probably the biggest reason I enjoy attending Wednesday Writers. I like to hear about what is going on. I like the fact that the group has a Facebook group page now even though I have less time for that than I do to attend meetings. But it is nice to be able to pop in to either to see what is happening in people’s writing lives.
It is great to hear about projects starting and finishing. It is encouraging to hear about successes. And it is even good to hear about the stumbles and roadblocks people are working through. After all, the old adage is true. Failure is not failure unless it is the last time you try.
I really just wanted to let you know it was great to be there when the group began and it is nice to be welcomed when I check in sporadically. It is nice to know that there is a place for writers and would be writers to get support and encouragement. It is nice to know that there are others who endeavor to get better at their chosen, often lonely, craft.
That loneliness is why writing groups are needed. After all (to loosely quote Bernadette):
“If writing was easy, everybody would be doing it, there would be a lot more books, and there would not be any need for support groups like ours.”
I just wanted to write this little note to say congratulations on a successful first year. I hope that Bernadette and company keep this group growing and writing for years to come. And I am so grateful that I am welcome whenever I attend.
Keep growing. Keep writing. Keep encouraging one another.
Happy belated birthday Monroe Wednesday Writers.

Thanks, Mike! I had no idea when I started the group it would turn out to be going strong a year later, and the favorite part of my week! Each Wednesday, I’m amazed and humbled by the voices and stories. Writing is so much more than putting words on the page . . .
