This year, Christmas feels like Thanksgiving in many ways.
Christmas is always a celebration of Christ’s birth at our house. It is a time to reflect that in giving presents to each other, we are trying to reflect the most blessed gift that God ever gave to us, His Son. It is a time for family. It is a time to just enjoy each other. This year, it is also a time to be thankful.
Our family was planning on being with my parents this Christmas. Little did I know that I would be traveling early to be with my dad in the hospital. It is a much longer story than that, but suffice it to say that he is home for Christmas. That song was a bit in doubt until he finally left the hospital. Thankfully, under his own power.
Which is why I am thinking Christmas feels like Thanksgiving this year.
I am thankful that Dad is home for Christmas. Sure, he has a bit more hardware than when he left, but he is here. I am thankful that we get to spend at least one more Christmas with him. I am thankful that I have gotten a new perspective on life and taking people for granted (no, not how to do that, but hopefully how not to do so). I am thankful that my family is my family. That my wife and kids support me and their grandparents. That my siblings can rally around our parents and give them the best support we are able to give. That we can all be together. At least for one more day.
I hope that I can keep thanking God for each and every blessing. And for each and every day. Maybe I need to think of each day as Thanksgiving instead of just one day in November. Or December. Regardless, All that thankfulness is why this Christmas feels more like Thanksgiving.
