Of Course, It’s an Ad · 7 December 2019

I decided that I need to rant a little about ads.

We live in a world where ads are ubiquitous. They are everywhere. On t-shirts. On billboards. On bumperstickers. And of course, on websites. Everything and everybody is seemingly an ad for some product or service. But that is not what I want to rant about.

What I really want to rant about is having to tell people the obvious. That if I have ads on my websites and people click through, I will receive compensation for those click-throughs. I figure it is obvious, but apparently as the owner of a website, I need to tell people that I might get some money for running the ads on my sites.

I wonder what the powers that be will think up next. Maybe there should be warnings on every store door that says the owners and people who work there will derive compensation for people buying goods and services at those shops. Or maybe there should be signs on every public building saying your tax dollars bought and built the great edifice. (Okay. That one already happens sometimes.) But why stop there. Perhaps there ought to be stickers on each piece of bread that says you might get calories in your system if you eat this. Oh wait. Food already tells you the number of calories and so much more. (Just not stuck on every individual piece.) But I suppose those labels are important. After all, people need to know what they are eating.

Which brings me back to telling my readers that I could derive benefits from them going to the ads that run on my sites. Oh and by the way, I also need to make sure that I do not point out that they ought to click through those ads. (No neon signs pointing to those ads saying “Click Here” or anything like that.) Ah well. Who knows what rules and regulations make sense. “Not I,” said the frog. (Which makes about as much sense as any of what I have written so far.)

Well, this is not as much of a rant as I thought it was going to be. All I know is that it seems ludicrous to need to tell people that the owner of a website could derive monetary benefits from running ads on his or her site. But there you have it. A little blurb above my ads to let people know that ads can create money.

Thanks for reading my little rant about ads. And now back to your regularly scheduled blog.
